We’ve all been told that physical activity has a significant impact on your mental health and overall well being and physical activity is good for both the mind and the body. But what does that really mean?
So How Does Exercise Help Me to Manage Stress?
Through exercise there is a reduction in the body’s stress hormones and studies have shown that people with symptoms of depression and anxiety had significantly decreased symptoms after just 20 minutes of movement daily.
By reducing your stress hormones, you can also:
Improve sleep
Increase social connection
Create positive and healthy behaviors
Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep more easily and sleep better overall. Exercise can also offer a great opportunity to becoming a part of the community and reducing isolation by joining social groups, group classes or team activities. This also allows you the opportunity to get outside more - which we all know is crucial for your mental health.
Being a part of a group has additional benefits which include finding a sense of purpose and meaning, feeling of belonging and achievement.
When you’re in a “flow state” as a result of physical movement or exercise, it’s the state of being present and concentrating in the moment. It allows you to feel more present and reconnect with what’s important to you.
Physical activities also promote mindfulness and breath work - think yoga - which may have a positive effect on your overall mental well being and promote peace and calm. This can support you in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Tips for including physical activity in your life
Start Small - Don’t bite off more than you can chew, you’ll be setting yourself up for failure which leads to quitting and feeling like you’ve failed
Start With Something You Enjoy - You are much more likely to stick with something if you are having fun and enjoying what you’re doing
Build It Into Your Routine - Make physical movement a part of your day - like brushing your teeth - you wouldn’t miss that so why not treat movement and exercise the same
Consider a Social Activity - Get out of the house, reduce your isolation and find an accountability partner
Exercise not only changes your body, it changes your mind, your attitude and your mood.
